With over 70 cultures on the Atherton Tablelands, our region has a rich story of both migration and Indigenous history. This continues today, with people from all corners of the world making the Atherton Tablelands their home. With diversity comes new ideas, varying perspectives and wisdom which help strengthen our communities and make them exciting. Photo caption (from left): There are at least a dozen different cultures at work at Better Together Community Support: Eileen Rothwell, Sergio Dinis, John Russell, Catherine Sharpe, Juanita Hunter and Rose Clark As an example, Atherton not-for-profit and community services organisation Better Together Community Support has over a dozen of cultural representations including Indigenous, British, Vietnamese, Albanian, Native American, Italian and Portuguese to name a few. This year, Better Together, with the support of the Tablelands Regional Council and Department of Social Services will host a multicultural forum to find out how Tablelanders would like to celebrate our multiculturlism. The forum, to be held next Friday at the Atherton SES Disaster Centre, will feature guest speakers. Everyone is invited. Tracey Dickinson, Community Development Coordinator at Better Together said, “If you are a member of a cultural or community group, or have ideas about how we can bring our community together to celebrate our cultural diversity, then you’re invited! “The forum will feature guest speakers who have worked to successfully integrate diversity and festivals in their communities and will hopefully provide inspiration to how we can bring everyone on the Atherton Tablelands together to celebrate our multicultural society. “One of the ideas the workshop would like to explore is forming a Multicultural Advisory Board that would really reflect the voices and ideas of the many cultural groups and people on the Tablelands.” People who would like to add their thoughts and voices to progressing multiculturalism and harmony on the Tablelands are urged to attend. To attend, please RSVP Better Together’s Community Development officer Rose Isherwood on email: rose.i@bettertogether.com.au or ph: 0488 791 418. The Multicultural Forum will be held next Friday, March 19, 9am-1.30pm at the Disaster Recovery Centre, 38 Vernon St, Atherton.
