Not every winter day on the Tablelands is crisp and sunny. Some mornings roll in with a wall of fog, drizzle on the roof, and a sky stuck on grey. On those days, it’s normal to feel a bit flat. When you’re watching your spending or feeling isolated at home, winter can hit even harder.
Shorter days and colder weather can throw off our routines—less sunshine, less movement, and fewer catch-ups with mates. It’s no surprise that many of us feel more tired, less motivated, and in some cases, even a bit down or depressed.
But there are ways to lift the gloom. To stay mentally well this winter, focus on the basics:
When you’re feeling low, doing the things you love can feel like a mountain to climb. But even a small spark of joy or accomplishment—whether from something familiar or something new—can help shift your mindset.
If you’re stuck at home or feeling isolated, remember: you’re not alone, and you don’t have to go it alone.
At Better Together Community Centre in Atherton, we’ve got friendly, welcoming activities running all winter:
Or just drop in for a cuppa and a chat. Sometimes, that’s all you need to feel a bit more human again.
Better Together isn’t the only community hub around. There are community centres in Mareeba, Dimbulah, Kuranda, Ravenshoe, and Malanda (ECHO). You can find your local centre by visiting ncq.org.au.
Another great way to boost your mental health is to volunteer. Helping others can give you a sense of purpose and connection—and it’s also a way to learn new skills, get back into work, or simply meet some good people.
So, if winter’s weighing you down, take one small step—reach out, join in, or just pop by. You’re always welcome.
And if you feel like you need more support, Better Together also offers psychology appointments. Taking that first step can lead to something better.
