Prioritising Your Wellbeing in Mental Health Month

October is Queensland Mental Health Month and the first week of October 4 – 12 October is observed annually during Mental Health Month, culminating in World Mental Health Day on October 10. The annual week aims to shine a spotlight on individual and community mental health and wellbeing.

This week is a reminder that looking after our minds is just as important as looking after our bodies. It provides an opportunity to understand the importance of mental health in our everyday lives. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices.

As we move through the busyness of life, it’s easy to overlook small signs of stress, anxiety, or low mood—especially for those who may be juggling work, family, caring responsibilities or navigating life transitions. Psychologically, changes in life can bring challenges. New jobs, new study, a new baby, retirement, adult children leaving home, health changes, or shifts in social connections can all impact our sense of purpose and emotional wellbeing.

The theme for Queensland Mental Health Week is, “Connect for mental health”. It emphasises the proactive measures that support positive mental health and wellbeing for ourselves and our communities. It provides an opportunity to consider and connect and take care of ourselves – do something we enjoy, do some exercise, make healthy choices and seek help when needed. It also provides a reminder to make social connection with our community and others; foster relationships with friends, family and loved ones. Helping others who are struggling, can ultimately help yourself. Connect with nature – take a break from technology, spend time outdoors embracing mindfulness or just being present while slowing down.

Mental health month is also a good time to challenge the stigma that still surrounds mental health. Reaching out for support is a sign of strength, not weakness. Talking with a friend, joining a group activity, or accessing professional help can prevent small challenges from becoming overwhelming.

Ultimately, Mental Health Month is a reminder that prioritising our mental health is not a luxury—it’s essential for living fully and enjoying the differing chapters of life. Small steps, taken consistently, can create big changes, and help us navigate life’s challenges with resilience, clarity, and compassion—for ourselves and for those around us.

Each year, people across Queensland come together during Mental Health Week through local events, conversations and activities to raise awareness of the importance of positive mental health and wellbeing.
